A former school teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student will serve no jail time after a plea deal.
Thirty-three year-old Shannon Herring of Kinston was an exceptional children's teacher at Southern Wayne High School. She was charged with two counts of sexual activity with a student. The victim was a 17-year-old boy.
In court Tuesday Herring pleaded guilty to two counts of neglect of a minor. She will have to serve 24 months of unsupervised probation, 50 hours of community service and pay a $300 fine.
Authorities say the encounters happened off campus in October & November of 2008. The school system says Herring was hired in August 2007 and was placed on administrative leave the day before the school went to authorities with the allegations. She resigned in March of 2009.
