Fatal Accident Kills 2, Injures 1 in Wayne County

A fatal accident has claimed the lives of two people and injured one in a wreck at the intersection of NC highways 581 and 222 in Wayne County Saturday morning, this according to state Highway Patrol.

The Troopers said a 1997 Chevy Blazer was traveling west on NC-222 when the driver failed to stop at a stop sign. The Blazer struck a 2000 Pontiac car that was driving south on NC-581.

The impact of the wreck caused the Blazer to hit a ditch, overturn and land in a field. The Pontiac vehicle also struck a ditch and landed in a field.

The wreck killed Agnes Byrd, 71, of Beaufort, and Donna Karen Capps, 49, of Henderson, troopers said. Byrd was a passenger in the Blazer and Capps was the driver of the Pontiac.

The driver of the Blazer, Michael Eugene Sowers, 61, of Beaufort, was transported to Wayne County Memorial Hospital. There was no information on his condition.

Authorities said charges are pending.

My heart and prayers go out to the Capps family. All of us with the Carney family are also sharing in loss and sorrow! I wish all the best for both of our familys!

We have lost a great teacher and an even better person in Ms. Capps. She was always a favorite among the students in school and was always outgoing. I was glad to see her get teacher of the year before I left. Terrible news to hear. My thoughts are with all the families involved.

As a local truck driver, I have to agree with Al.I've had several close calls at that intersection and if I had not been familiar with it they would have been bad.The D O T don't think twice about putting a light on a 4 lane hwy thats not needed (Hwy 117 south between Goldsboro and Mt. Olive)that has actually caused fatalities but they just don't seem to care about the 2 lane roads. My prayers go out to the families.

As a former resident of Wayne county and a Former EMT and fire fighter from that side of Wayne county,I think they need to put a stop light at that intersection. There has been too many lives lost there and way too many serious injuries as well. How many more people have to die before NC DOT does anything about it?? It is like the intersection at 581 and Pikeville -Princeton Road. It too is a bad intersection.I lost a friend and had a another seriously injured due to someone not paying attention and running the stop sign and T-boning them at full speed. I am sure there are a lot of places like this all over NC. I can recall another one is Frog level Rd and Forelines Rd in Pitt and the other intersections in that area on the same stretch of rd. It took a lot of fatalities before NC DOT put $ways stops and a stop light. So maybe Bev will place some money someday soon to combat the problems. I will not hold my breath on this! God bless the families who have lost loved ones!
