School Bus Accident In Wayne County

WAYNE COUNTY -- It was a bumpy ride to school for a busload of elementary school children Wednesday. The Highway Patrol says an accident sent three children to the hospital.

Trooper A.R. Fowler with the Highway Patrol in Wayne County says a dump truck and a school bus hit each other's mirrors on Slick Rock Rd. near Highway 111. The bus was transporting about forty children to Spring Creek Elementary. The call was reported to authorities at 7:40 a.m.

Trooper Fowler says the windows in the bus were down, and flying glass hit some children. Three were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The dump truck did not stop after the accident, Trooper Fowler says, which classifies the accident as a hit and run. The only description of the dump truck the school bus driver was able to provide so far was that it was red and white.

And I bet no one every thought of contacting the parents after the accident. My child was on that bus and I never recieved any call nothing but a letter later that afternoon notifying us about it. All it would have taken was for the school to call my emergency contact info and let us know. Insead my 7 year old had to endure being in an tramiatic accident and then had to go straight to class without breakfast and had to wait till lunch before getting any food or drink (besides water fountian). I am very upset that we were never notified after it happened. And I think it was stupid of the school not to at least notify the childrens parents about what had happend. Even though it was minor there were flying debree (glass) and it could have easily gotten in anyones hair or shoes and from what I was told by my kid, all they asked was who was hurt. NOT even check each kid individually. Too make sure there were no problems. This is what make me upset with the school.

The dump truck driver probably works right down the road from where this happened.I can't name the business but it does need to be investigated.Hope all the kids will be ok.Could have been much worse.

not so relevant to this mirror on mirror wreck but I agree with Joe , our government makes me, a 40 year old with perfect driving record wear a seatbelt, wear a helmet on my bike, have flotation devices on my boat BUT doesnt put seat belts on childrens school buses. Surely there are others who think this is crazy also. Please write your representatives @ and emand seatbelts on school buses

I wonder if the NCHigway Patrol gave all the children and driver a seatbelt ticket. OH, i forgot. We can put our kids on a bus that does not have seatbelts but they have the audacity to give me and you a seatbelt ticket. Ask your house and senate members to require seatbelts on our childrens buses.

I bet that there will be a lawsuit coming out when the parents find out where the dump truck is at and who it belongs to, that's if they do. Also I bet the dump truck driver will be fired from the business he or she works for. It would not surprise me if the owner or driver of the dump truck will try to cover up the evidence that it was their dump truck. I have an overall feeling that they wont find out who it is, unless some other citizens have witnessed it and told officials who it is. Other than that, I hope the kids get better and wish the parents good luck.
