Goldsboro Man Says He Took Plea To Put Ordeal Behind Him

A man who spent more than three years in jail on murder charges that were eventually dropped says he took a plea because he wanted the ordeal behind him.

James Johnson spoke Wednesday night after a prayer vigil marking
the end of a situation that saw him jailed in connection with the death of 17-year-old Brittany Willis.

Johnson said he wanted so desperately to never have to think about seeing a jail cell he entered an Alford plea Monday to a misprision of a felony charge in a Wilson County Court. Under the plea, Johnson admits no guilt to the charge, serves no time and no judgment goes on his record.

Kenneth Meeks was convicted and sentenced to life without parole
in Willis' death. He later came forward declaring Johnson was
innocent.
