An expert says a freshman basketball player who died this week at a North Carolina school during basketball practice was the fifth high school athlete to die in a year.
Officials said 14-year-old Anthony Dontra Eatmon collapsed and died Monday after a break during practice at Hunt High School in Wilson. No cause of death has been determined.
The News & Observer reported Wednesday that the 6-foot-2, 300-pound Eatmon was the fifth North Carolina high school athlete to die at a game or practice in a year.
Dr. Frederick Mueller is director of the National Center for Catastrophic Injury in Chapel Hill and says he doesn't recall five high school athletes dying in one year in the state.
