It is a tradition that started 10 years ago and now thousands are expected to head to Mt. Olive to watch a giant pickle ring in the New Year.

New York might have a giant ball but Mt. Olive has a giant pickle.

Lynn Pearsall Williams who is the community relations representative says, "we are the home of the second best selling brand of pickle in the US. So what else would we drop on New Year's Eve."

So when the clock strikes midnight Greenwich Meridian Time that would be 7pm Mount Olive, the pickle will drop 45 feet down the flag pole.

Jennifer Turner who lives in the area likes the idea. She said, " if you want to do something later you still have the time. Even make it up to Raleigh if you want to see up there. If you don't want to drive that far at least you can say you did something for New Years."

The pickle drop is sponsored by the Mount Olive Pickle Company. They've been doing this since 1999 when they became the Official Pickle and Pepper of the Millennium. Since then it's been a holiday tradition at the corner of Cucumber and Vine.

Williams says people come from all over to watch the pickle drop. She said they have had people from Hawaii and as far away as Germany.

Trip advisor announced America's Top 10 Quirkiest New Year's Eve Events. On that website Mt. Olive ranks number 4.
