A police chase that lasted for more than 30 miles and exceeded speeds of 145 miles per hour has landed a Winterville man behind bars.

Branson Williams is charged with felony speeding to elude arrest, 145 mph speeding in a 70 mph zone, reckless driving, aggressive driving, as well as resist and obstruct an officer.

State troopers say the chase began around 9:00 p.m. Wednesday in Greenville on Greenville Boulevard near 14th Street when they noticed two motorcyclists riding recklessly and possibly racing.

One of the motorcycles stopped for the trooper, but the other did not. Trooper W.A. Hardison chased the motorcycle down Greenville Boulevard, onto Highway 264 and all the way to Wilson.

When the cyclist slowed down to take an exit, Hardison boxed him in. The Highway Patrol says the 26-year-old Williams tried to run, but Hardison tazed him and then placed him under arrest. The trooper's patrol car had some minor damage when the motorcycle struck it.

His bond was set at $75,000.
