RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A Wake County detention officer has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for the beating death of an inmate at the Wake County jail last summer.
The jury in the trial of Markeith Council began deliberating late Wednesday. Council had been charged with voluntary manslaughter, but the jury chose Thursday to convict him of the lesser crime.
Council was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years' probation.
A video shown during the three-day trial shows a brief fight between Council and inmate Shon Demetrius McClain in a day room at the Wake County jail that ends with Council twice slamming McClain to the concrete floor.
The 40-year-old McClain died on June 17, almost two weeks after the incident. Council was charged with voluntary manslaughter on Aug. 6.
