UNC Falls To Miami 5-3, Snaps Win Streak

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Grayson Atwood hit a game-tying two-run home run in the seventh but Dale Carey answered with a two-run shot of his own to lead sixth-seeded Miami to a 5-3 win over second-seeded North Carolina Thursday afternoon at NewBridge Bank Park. Carolina drops to 1-1 in round-robin pool play but can still advance to the ACC title game with a win over NC State Saturday night.

Miami (34-21) scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings off Carolina starter Kent Emanuel before the Tar Heels tied it in the seventh.

Tommy Coyle reached on a single before Atwood replaced Adam Griffin with one out in the top of the inning. The Mount Pleasant, N.C., freshman, making just his fifth appearance this month, mashed a first-pitch fastball over the wall in left-center to tie the game at 3.
The Hurricanes would answer in the bottom of the frame, however, thanks to a pair of two-out hits. Stephen Perez singled up the middle before Carey sent a 1-2 offering out to left.

Carolina (43-14) threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs. Pinch-hitter Brian Holberton singled with one out before Miami closer AJ Salcines issued a pair of two-out walks to Chaz Frank and Michael Russell. That brought Colin Moran to the plate with the tying run on second, but the sophomore standout was caught looking to end the rally.

Emanuel fell to 8-4 on the year despite allowing just six hits and striking out nine, while Steven Ewing improved to 6-2 after going eight for the Hurricanes. Frank and Coyle each had two hits to lead Carolina, who faces NC State Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the final game of pool play. If NC State enters the game 2-0 or if Wake Forest beats both NC State and Miami, the Tar Heels will advance to Sunday's title game with a win over the Wolfpack.
