UNC Defense Changes Focus From Run To Pass For Pirates

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina spent the past week preparing to stop Georgia Tech's run-focused offense. Now the Tar Heels must change their focus completely to stopping East Carolina's pass-heavy spread attack.

The Tar Heels (3-1) allowed nearly 500 total yards in the 35-28 loss to the Yellow Jackets over the weekend. The defense will get a different challenge when the Tar Heels travel to Greenville to face a senior quarterback in an offense that won't hesitate to throw the ball more than 40 times a game.

Interim coach Everett Withers says his defense needs to get the Pirates into third-and-long situations so they can make things tougher on Pirates passer Dominique Davis. That would also give the Tar Heels' pass rush more chances for big plays.

UNC will never be known as Carolina and neither will ECU. Carolina will always be in Columbia, South Carolina. However, I think ECU will find a way to win this in a nailbiter as I'm going with a friend to Greenville and see this, taking advantage of my free ticket. I'm going to be a neutral fan as I am a college football fan in general. That saying GO GAMECOCKS!

Pirate fans you get what you pay for. Coach Ruff is a good guy but not a big time football coach. Terry Wholland that's right Who-lland needs to come off the cash and get a true football coach.

hmmm remember when texas tech had a good run at it a few years ago...ruff was the defensive cordinator and assistant head coach, if ecu did not pick him up he would be coaching at just a good or even better school. He's a good coach who is going to bring in good recruits because players like him, don't loose hope yet he'll be just fine. Plus he is not using ECU as a stepping stone like must coaches do (skip).

if ecu didn't pick up Ruff he would be an assistant, some are head coaches some are coordinators . Watch any Ruff interview his coaches show for instance, he is not a head coach! It will take Holland another season to realize this, he is so slow to react thats why ecu is trying to get into the dead big east conference. If Holland would have been on the ball ECU would have been in the big east a few years ago built a rep and would now be moving on to another bcs conference. ECU will probably get into the big east with the rest of the eastern div. of c-usa BUT it will no longer be a bcs conference! After all is said and done your great AD has spent alot of money with no net gains! you will all agree when its all said and done over the next 2 seasons!

ahh agree to disagree, we did try to move conferences a few years back but got denied. That's why we have been playing the wating game for a conference to shake up just like the BE did. People say why jump on a sinking ship, I say why stay on a kayak without paddels at least the BE's ship can be fixed!

Huh? Your writing is as bad as that which you're trying to (weakly) criticize? Let me guess, another WalHeel? Here's a hint... the school that you support (UNC-CHeat) hates and resents you. They take your money and laugh at you behind your back. You are like an abused wife that supports your husband (CHeater Hill) regardless of their disdain and infidelity to everything that you have worked for and represent in life. A sad existence you lead; but denial is your calling card. Welcome to your pathetic existence.

You are dead wrong.McNeill is a good coach.JUst give him time to build his program.Holland is a class act.MUch better ad that NC State Or UNC has.
  • by Chuck on Sep 26, 2011 at 05:33 PM
ECU Absolutely must stop the turnovers. UNC cannot Totally stop Bullock. If ECU Q/back Davis is in sink,He will pick apart the UNC Defense.UNC Q/Back looks shaky to me. Don't think ECU Can stop UNC Running either. Both Teams must elimate or cut down on turnovers. If So this might be a interesting game & Very Close. "But This Game Will be played on the field/Not On This Website".

Chuck you are dreaming unc-ecu will be one sloppy mess if ecu is even in the game. ecu is an ugly brand of football. If unc shows up ready to play they will drop half a hundred on your pirates! this ecu program is terrible if you played the schedule you did in the mid 90s you would be 2-10 every year! you barely beat uab who may only win 1 game all year Memphis another pirate foe! What a coach you have, who can understand him?

Could someone please translate illiterate Walheel dialect into English? These people support a school that looks down upon them, yet they wear their effeminate pale blue while Chapel Hill alum. take their money and whisper behind their back. Translation for you ENC (baby) blue bloods: "Kerliner thinks y'all are low-brows but gets all tickled that they play you like a-fiddle all the way to the bank". Let me try this another way: ""ders a sucka born evry minute and y'all are on da wrong side of sucka". Yeehaa... go "Kerliner"!

UNC football is a complete joke for a school with a BCS tag, just like Duke. They cheat to try to get ahead of their rivals Duke, and then it catches up to them.

If the Pirates play like they did against UAB, UNC won't need too much practice. Like "Practice" said, they just need to work on catching interceptions and picking up fumbles. I'm a true Pirate fan, but something has got to change.
  • by JKL on Sep 26, 2011 at 03:29 PM
ECU is going to get whomped by UNC. I am not a fan of either team by any means but I know my football. I guess the Greenville Wal Mart is going to be plenty crowed the next few days with all of the ECU fans buying their apparel from there.

No, that would be those uneducated thugs who shop there and are on the Michael Jordan bandwagon. I am an alum of the Carolina Gamecocks, but a Wilmington native, and I've seen quite a few UNC fans in Greenville in the past. Most of the UNC and Duke fans never could get in a 4 year college. Most of them speak like they have a 4th grade education and wear that old # 23 Michael Jordan jersey every week. I'm no ECU fan one bit but at least ECU and N.C. State have true fans shop for authentic gear (not Wal-Mart) and pull for ECU in ALL SPORTS. Until you and the other UNC fans assume ECU will get whooped, tell me some names of some players and tell me if you ever have gone to a game. Otherwise, you all can hush. I see this UNC bandwagon stuff on the comment section of the Wilmington stations as well.

Nah you're wrong, Wal-Mart just caters to cheap people who don't really want to contribute anything to a school/college/university aside from being a couch cheerleader. Real fans are willing to spend more than $3 for a shirt, that's why we mock Wal-Mart UNC fans. They make up 95% of the fanbase, and the other real 5% hates those embarassing people who have no real connection to UNC.

Like it or not, the Pirates have the greatest football following in the state right now and are still growing. It is a school that has always been held back by what some consider to be the big two in the state. If Carolina and State are as great as some feel then why would they feel so threatened by ECU being given an opportunity to get in their conference. Money has everything to do with it. Competition helps us all unless you feel unsure of yourself. I have yet to see a game involving ECU against any in state schools that wasn't a sell out. This should tell you something. The state of NC benefits from these rivalries. Terry Holland will continue to attract attention by scheduling games against competetive teams and building a quality program. McNeil will be an asset to the ECU program as well. Also remember, ECU hasn't violated NCAA regulations the way that UNC has.
