Two Raleigh Officers In Shooting Are Recent Recruits

Police say two of the three officers involved in the shooting of an unarmed woman had been on the force less than two years.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that 23-year-old Charles Matthews II and 23-year-old Philip D. Matthews had joined the Raleigh police department in February 2009. Officials would not say whether the two men were related. The third officer was 26-year-old Diana Painter who had been with the force since November 2006.

The three officers responded to a call at the motel early Thursday about a woman causing a commotion in the parking lot. Officials say 37-year-old Emmerli Latrice Wilcoxson of Clayton County, Ga., was shot several times after making threats and charging the officer.

Wilcoxson was listed in serious condition at WakeMed hospital.
The case is under investigation.

Officers put their lives on the line every day for us. I sure don't know what I would do if someone was acting crazy and then said they were going to kill me and then appeared to reach for a gun. It's not an easy job and officers need to be able to protect themselves. Where would we all be without them? I would never want that job and I thank God that they are willing to protect us all. I think we need to support those who risk their lives every day to defend people they don't even know.

While all you Court recognized "Expert Witnesses" run your mouth about what these officers "should have done", may I ask you guys and girls a question ?? Do you know her physical description ? Was she armed with any type weapon ? No, I don't think you know the answers from reading the story !! Everyone wants to assume the officers should have done everything but shoot her, yet you weren't there and don't know the first facts regarding the circumstances of the incident. I am 6'5" & weigh 225 lbs, but if you have a knife or box cutter in you hand and fail to follow my verbal commands and than charge toward me in an aggressive manner, I asure you I will put bullet holes in you. No one wants to be killed or assaulted in their work place by their fellow workers or some stranger with mental problems. We carry guns to protect YOU and ourselves from those who would do US harm. Wait until the FACTS come out before you become so self righteous in your comments about how WE should do our job.

It's easy for you to sit there and be judge jury isn't it? You are not being threatened or under any pressure to make a split second decision. I'm not saying these three officers are justified or that they are at fault because I was not there. Were you there? Let's give them there just do and let the system do it's job!!! I can tell you this much though I have been in law enforcement for 14 years because it is what I love to do!! I want to help the injured and protect the weak. A simple question for you is What do you do? Do you put others well being before your own? When it floods or there is a weather emergency are you home or are you out trying to save someone from a tradgey with no idea wether your own home is damaged? Don't judge the officer's unless you have the entire story! All Law Enforcement Officer's can not be grouped into one big category, thats like you being racist against the color blue.If you don't like cops then when you have an emergency don't call them. :-!!!!!!!!!!!

If she has mental issues than she would have not stop. Hot head cops with their guns. A bunch of cowards. Three people could not handle one woman. And all of you people taking up for them are the same as them a bunch of crazy criminals. They need to lose their jobs and be tried for murder. Let them stand behind bars too.

"Cowards with badges and guns shoot a woman for running at them" is what the title should read.these guys need to grow a set and find another line of work too.

To everyone up here stating they should have used a taser... Not all cops have tasers. and as for the cops teaming up and tackling her to the ground, what if she had a gun? point being is alot of us are making comments up here as if were all subject matter experts when the truth is LEO's are trained to do they're job and when put in certain situations they are allowed to make judgement calls instead of everything being written in black and white. I agree with j voter, laura, and all the others up here who support what the cops did. to: torightwing, point is she charged at cops, and as for you attacking the cops wife saying ur brainwashed just like them, get a life... Im pretty convinced she wants her hubby to come home from work at the end of his shift. either support our law enforcement or quit posting such negative comments towards them. To many people do not appreciate the job they do serving and protecting our communities till they need to call a cop for themselves.

She was causing a commotion in the parking lot...with herself! The woman was obviously mentally disturbed. They knew this before coming to the location. I guess they didn't want to use the taser this time. Praying for her infant child that was in the motel room.

I believe the LEO's acted within their rights. If people would stop acting ignorant, these things wouldn't happen. Plain and simple.

Can you spell lawsuit!!!!!!! Why did the officers together tackle the woman to the ground instead of shooting her. That is crazy. something is not looking right and the S.B.I should lead the investigation.
