CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 10 North Carolina turned in a second straight shutout and Colin Moran made a splash in his return to the lineup as the Tar Heels (31-13) downed Winthrop (13-30), 2-0 Wednesday night. Moran was 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and two RBI to pace the Tar Heel offense.
Moran made his presence felt right away as he drove home the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the first inning.
Lead off man Chaz Frank drew a walk to open the first and proceeded to make his way to third by stealing second base and moving up on a throwing error.
Moran worked his way into a hitter's count at 2-1 before slapping a Preston Johnson offering through the left side to plate Frank and give Hobbs Johnson a 1-0 lead to work with.
The sophomore left-hander was impressive on the mound once again as he cruised through four innings of work not allowing a runner to reach second base.
Johnson surrendered just two hits in his four innings of work, did not walk a batter and struck out six Eagles.
Relievers Shane Taylor and Tate Parrish combined on a scoreless fifth inning before freshman right-hander Chris McCue set the Eagles down in order in the sixth.
Moran made it a 2-0 Tar Heel lead when he opened the sixth with a solo home run, his third of the year, by turning on a Mitchell Knox offering and sending it into the night over the right field wall.
The back-end duo of R.C. Orlan and Michael Morin provided the final nine outs of the ball game to give Carolina the 2-0 win.
Orlan threw a scoreless seventh before notching two outs in the eighth and made way for Morin on the mound.
The junior closer shut the door on the eighth before forcing a game-ending 4-6-3 double play for his 11th save of the year.
The Tar Heel pitching staff has posted 19 straight scoreless frames over their last two games and will look to carry the momentum into Friday's series opener against Boston College.
