Two veteran Republicans are poised to lead the North Carolina Senate committee that writes tax laws.
A spokesman for Senate leader nominee Phil Berger confirmed Monday that Sens. Fletcher Hartsell and Bob Rucho will share the chairmanship of the Senate Finance Committee. The jobs are contingent on Berger winning the leader's post Jan. 26. That's expected because the GOP now holds a majority in the chamber.
Hartsell is a Concord lawyer who came to the Senate in 1991. He was one of the few GOP committee chairmen when Democrats controlled the Senate. Rucho is a Charlotte-area dentist who first came to the Senate in 1997. He left for about three years before returning in 2008. He's also the expected Senate redistricting chief.
