Task Force: Sterilization Victims Should Get $50K

A task force is recommending that people who were sterilized against their will under an old North Carolina state program be paid $50,000 each in compensation.

About half a dozen states have apologized for similar 20th century practices, called eugenics. But North Carolina is the first to move toward paying damages to the surviving victims.

The Legislature must still approve any payments.

The panel recommended Tuesday that the money go to living victims, including those who are alive now but may die before the lawmakers approve any compensation.

The state sterilized more than 7,600 people between 1929 and 1974. A task force report last year said 1,500 to 2,000 of those victims are still alive, and the state has verified 72 victims.

I can only hope that those window rattling car stereo systems thumping what some consider music causes sterility.

No they should not and you do not have my permission to use my taxpayer dollars for this.

How many of the people could afford children? I am tired of paying for all these girls having babies that they cannot afford and do not know the father. I am tired of all these little boys not stepping up to the plate if they are man enought to help make a baby they need to support them . It is not the government responsibility to take care of these dead beats parents

All convicted rapist and child molesters should be sterilized. Paying women not to have children would be a cheep and realistic way to go. Think how much the crime rate would drop. Of course the dems would to many of their votes for this to happen. GREAT IDEA

Do any of you people know of anyone that was forced to be sterilized? I do. She is a beautiful, smart productive chemical engineer. She had her ovaries removed as a child-she is a Lumbee Indian. Your sterotyping and racial tones are an embarrassment. What happened to her and her neighbors was a crime against humanity. You people should be ashamed.

This conversation was in the late 1970s, she was in her late 20s then.(she and her husband were my business partners) My best guess, she was 8 or 9 yrs old when this crime against her was done. She was so ashamed. I do not know where she is now, but $$$ for what was done to her would not mean a thing to her. A simple, sincere apology would be nice. Personally, I believe that the few remaining politicians from that era that made this policy into law should be prosecuted for crime against humanity.

Thanks for the update. I have done research and see this did happen to young Lumbee youths deemed to be 'delinquents', who were also sent to state training schools. I guess those were like detention schools. The Lumbee's do have a history of problems with acceptance, even by other tribes. In the case of your friend, it doesn't sound fair.

Really! These are the people who should not have been having children to begin with! The state should reinstate the program.

You think so? Well then lets just reinstate it, and see if you feel the same way when they sterilize your child based on a low score in math or because of a medical condition. Sure you think it wouldn't happen, but once you give the government that much control anything could happen. Alot of the people who were sterilized while this was in effect were not the ones who were intended to be, they were ordinary people like you and I.

You obviously don't see what I see everyday in the community.

I see things that go on in the community, so many mothers popping off baby after baby to get a welfare check, people that wouldn't work if their life depended on it, people that are completely unfit to raise children. But this is not the answer, there has to be another way, we cannot do this again.

That's fine. I think we should also start taking children away from parents who raise their children in a bigoted household.

To all of you dem supporters here this was done by DEMOCRATS. The democrats forced, mostly black people, to be forecebly sterilized. Yet you blindly support them??

All of you who are making these comments need to study your history a little bit more. And how would you men like it if you were sterilized without your permission and unknowingly. You are already to scared to have a clip clip now. These men and women were denied the right to have children and NC should pay for it. They should have been given a choice. As for you who keeps talking about welfare just who do you think is on welfare maybe you should check your county records you maybe surprised to see who is getting assistance. Probably your next door neighbor in your elite neighborhood living high and mighty on Section 8. Everyone on public assistance is not robbing the system. I agree some people abuse the system but not everyone. Stop pointing fingers because you know one points right back at you.

How are they gonna make a choice when some of them don't even know what their name is? Regina, Regina...you think everyone that post on this site or post something against what you believe are elitist? And live in well to do neighborhoods? You really need to get out more. By the way there are LOTS of folks abusing the system, not just a few.

More benefit from the system than abuse the system. What really constitutes abusing the system for that manner? Is a farmer getting subsidies abusing the system? I certantly think so, they're driving quarter of a million dollar tractor and brand new trucks that the government basically pays for.
