State Unemployment Rate Rises

Our state's unemployment rate has risen to 10.1 percent in July.

The state Employment Security Commission released the findings Friday.

Those numbers are up from 9.9 percent in June.

The commission says that the contributing factor in the increase was the loss of more than 12,000 public sector jobs.

The rate was in double digits in June 2010 at 10%.

Previous story:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Officials will have their eyes on whether North Carolina's unemployment rate keeps rising as government workers lose their jobs or private companies are adding help.

The Employment Security Commission on Friday releases data showing the state unemployment rate for July. June's jobless rate rose to 9.9 percent as community colleges, universities and other state government employers cut 7,600 workers that month.

The nearly $20 billion state budget took effect in July, and the spending plan included planned layoffs throughout state government.

Democrats had the presidency, the house and the congress for TWO FULL YEARS. The democrats have had the majority of the house only for EIGHT MONTHS. Who is to blame? THE DEMOCRATS, stop trying to blame someone else for this administrations failures and place the blame where it lies, with the democrats!!

News Flash...Republicans Filibustered every jobs bill the Democrats proposed! They will do anything, anything to slow job growth, and make sure Obama is not re-elected. Even if it means destroying the economy. Just like they did with the debt ceiling, and celebrated when the US was downgraded. They also cheered when the US was not chosen for the Olympic games. And they call themselves Pro-American?

Nice theory, but don't let the facts get in the way, those job creating bills had more terds attached to them than the healthcare bill. If you think the solution is to create government jobs...you have been fooled. Jobs are created in the private sector, not the government. You know, someone needs to feed the tax base to pay for government workers and when it drys up, they go away, get it?

Look at the pathetic libs trying to pretend like North Carolina is not subject to obama and the dems failed policies hurting EVERYONE in the Unites States. We had two failed years with complete dem control in the US and all we heard was "Bush dug such a big hole in 8 years". We have had 6 months of Republicans only controlling the NC House and Senate with a incompetent democrat Gov. blocking anything worthwhile after 100 years of dems putting us into the hole.

Dave, first blaming bush is an excuse for poor performance just like a child would do. Secondly, the damage the democrats did to this state drove taxes up so high, compared to nearby states, it will take a long time to repair. So with the kids that post here, they want instant ego gratification just like their parents gave them in the stores. Its like arguing with my co workers over all the expansion at ECU, my alumni college...who is paying for that. Oh, it was spent in the past budgets. So why don't they put it off until they can afford it? Oh, it was in last years budget. Well, I would really like a Ferrai next year and I know it will be worth what I paid for it...but..right now might not be the time even though I put money away last year. Do I want it, heck yeah, do I need it...well...it can wait until times are better. My point, these guys are conservatives and see it as well, it was last years budget. Well, last years budget is this years deficit. ECU has to cut funding and jobs by millions...OK...my alma mater...put it off until we can afford it or look at what we are doing in spending to see if we "need" what we are spending. My favorite is pond tadpole counters and shrimp treadmill observers...I think...I could be wrong...but we can let those go. With all the new EPA jobs Obama made us hire with federal assistance...do we really need to pay for the positions for Chinese prostitues that they like best? That Obama has it going on and Bev smiles.....geez...by the way great post!

the unemployment numbers will creep up even higher when all of the politicians from NC get out of prison. Unless Bev gives them a cushy job like she has all her other friends. She does have friends in low places.

You can thank about 95 % of the politicians at the state level and federal level. We need Pat McCrory for governor in 2012 and we need either Chris Christie or Herman Cain for president in 2012. Vote these 2 along with many of your senators and representatives that are taking money for themselves and not being useful in doing their job helping out the economy. Barack and Beverly have been two of the worst at not doing what they have been been paid to do and have abuse their political power.

We don't need another Tea Party/GOP hack singing the same old "job creator" tune. Those "job creators" have had their tax breaks for ten years now and haven't created one job yet (in America).

by Did you day Herman Caine? on Aug 19, 2011 at 05:33 PM in reply to Sam
Maybe you should check the Aquila Lawsuit Suit against Herman Caine. Cain served on the board of directors throughout Aquila's ill-fated trading misadventure and the subsequent collapse of the company's retirement fund. In fact, he chaired the board's compensation committee, which, according to the lawsuit, had direct oversight of the push to get employees to invest more and more in Aquila stock. As chair of the compensation committee, Cain also saw fit to dole out $30 million in bonuses, not including stock options, to the top five execs at Aquila in 2002, with the company's stock plummeting. A month after the Kansas City Star reported on the hefty bonuses in July 2002, the company laid off 500 employees, and the losses to employees holding company stock had reached hundreds of millions of dollars. Just so you know. Sam.

I can not believe some of these comments. our rating shouldn't have been dropped, who owns our terrible debt?? oh wait we do the american people and our own government owns most of it.. China owns a whopping 8% of our debt.... When the republican party fired out teachers, they caused our unemployment to rise not Obama , not Bev. THE MAJORITY IN CONTROL of our GOVERNMENT.. And yes governments do create jobs..

governments create jobs, but they do NOT create the merchandise to pay for those jobs. They TAKE the money in taxes to pay for those jobs. So technically a government job costs we tax payers more money.

It is not government created jobs, it's government created paychecks. The number of required hours of a paid full time government employee should be raised from 20 hours to 25 hours @week.(sarcasm,but based on what i see)

Ben that is a good observation. Unfortunately, social security is a large owner of US treasury debt, which means it's leveraged against itself. The downgrade is more emotional than anything- we still have the most solid treasury bill deal on the planet. Interest rates will go up, however, due to market instability- all emotional.

I hope everyone is happy! The Republicans in the General Assembly did this just to get rid of a 1 cent sales tax increase! That's an extra $1 per $100 spent that we are all saving & I can tell that all the business tax breaks & incentives are really working & they are hiring as fast as they can! Good job Republicans!!! Our education system is grossly underfunded...but who cares? There aren't any jobs for people anyway so why worry about educating yourself to get one?

If you are a teacher, then you have the ability to figure out what happens when you spend more than you take in. You also have the ability to find out what happened. This train is been in the wrong direction on a one way track due to the democrats that held both houses. It wasn't the teachers, it was those green jobs that cost the teachers and other public servents their jobs. The democrats and Bev made sure we had plenty of pond tadpole counters and water sample people to keep the feds happy. Its part of the reward progam that Bev has for supporters. Of course, these jobs were protected since Obama said they had to be there with the EPA. Don't take my word for it. Use you favorite search engine to get the truth. Steer away from the liberal as they are paid spin posters for the DNC. I am telling you, you have been had by your own party. I know, I am a democrat.
