NC State Students Raise The Issue Of Campus Smoking Ban

Student government leaders at NC State are proposing a campus-wide smoking ban, and it's raising questions about whether other campuses will follow.

The ban would make NC State the first university in the UNC system to go 100 percent smoke free.

ECU isn't considering a smoking ban right now, but the president of the Student Government Association says NC State's proposal will most likely open up discussion on the issue at ecu.

Josh Martinkovic says right now, people can smoke at ECU as long as they're outside and at least 25 feet away from campus buildings. He says the board of trustees is meeting next Thursday and Friday to finalize a 20-year master plan, and says he believes they'll discuss whether ECU should keep its smoking policy the same, or go in a different direction.

The SGA says it would talk to students and the campus community to see what the overall feeling was before ever suggesting a smoking ban.

Samatha and ECU Student, alcohol should be banned from all Universitys. Alcohol kills 1000s more students every year. If everyone used your way of thinking, we wouldn't really be free would we? All you would have to say in your posts is that smokers should be rounded up and put in concetration camps. Everything else your posts state fit exactly in the Joeseph Stalin's way of thinking. This is a quote from Joeseph Stalin; "If the opposition disarms, well and good. If it refuses to disarm, we shall disarm it ourselves." Stand up for Freedom when you are picking your battles. It doesn't matter if you like it or don't like it. And NO!!! I don't smoke or drink but I sure want to keep the right to do so if I choose to.

I think ECU should do a smoke free campus simply because students are STILL not following the rules we have now. Constantly I walk outside the building and walk into a cloud of smoke. I think students are unaware of what 25 feet really is. I still see people AND professors smoking in the breezeways of buildings, (between wings at brewster for example). Find a way to enforce the rules we have or make new ones.

Smoking should be banned from all public places. If people want to get cancer, they should take it to their own private areas. It's not fair to everyone else around them being exposed to the number one cause of lung cancer in the US. And to the people saying that people didn't die early back then, get it together. People died crazy early back then and now with new technology and modern medicine, the longevity of people's lives is increasing. There are people who have asthma all around, cigarette smoke is a trigger for asthma and isn't fair to people who are not killing themselves. Quit smoking or smoke in the comfort of your own home but don't expose it to your poor children who have no say in it!

ECU Student you are all over the place. You as a student need to be more aware of the freedoms that are taken away from us every year. There are rules that pertain to smoking on campus. Your problem should be with the University not enforcing their rules. To out right ban something that is legal is rediculous. I think there could be a more convincing argument from student government to ban all alcoholic beverages from campus. I bet if they did a study they would find that a college student's chances of being killed by a fellow student that is drunk is much higher than from a smoker. People with asthma "all around"; whatever that means, can have asthma attacks from many enviromental triggers. Especially such things as hayfever. Flowers produce pollen and pollen causes hayfever, thus causing an astma attack. In your way of thinking, the University should pull up all the flowers and cut down all the flowering trees. You as a student should learn to stand up for your freedoms. It doesn't matter if you don't like it. You at least have a choice. Think about it!!! Which would serve ECU better; banning smoking or banning alcohol use???? No beer at ECU football games. Wow!!! I don't drink or smoke and most importantly, I don't try to remove freedoms that my forefathers faught and died for. No matter what they are!!!

Assuming you work, does the company you work for allow smoking in the buildings? I'm paying this university for a service: an education. They own the campus and have the right to say what people on the campus can/can't do. They aren't saying students aren't allowed to smoke EVER. What you do in private and what you do on someone else's property are different things. And if you want to argue that 'it's owned by the public,' then the public should decide whether or not smoking is ok on the property. I don't see anybody complaining because we can't smoke inside the buildings.

Please read the story. There is already no smoking allowed in the buildings. You know there are designated smoking areas and ECU should have these. Not a total smoking ban. You are paying for an education. Not imposing the "your" will on other people.

Tobacco money built NC State! I have watched this state run from its history until it sickens me. When you go to local historical sites you get a watered down, politically correct hogwash version of history. I grew up on a tobacco farm, we no longer farm but I have done everything in tobacco except be a smoker. There is never any mention of cutting drinking in this country, let me know when someone under influence of tobacco kills a family of 4 on an interstate from the tobacco! This country has lost its way , you can't pray in schools, but you can teach the Quran? at Chapel Hill! Heck even Pitt County hospital thinks there to good to be associated with Pitt County so they are vidant health! Maybe ol' North Carolina who by the way all these great schools and universities have caused an actual loss of jobs overall in this state since 1999! That was according to the Raleigh N&O! In my opinion its probably because alot on NCers have not gone to this states great universities, those schools chose the Jersey Shore crowd to accept! Just go to an ECU football game and you will see what I mean. Before you even give me the stats on how many students are in state schools, did you factor in all the instaters that are using their yankee grandparents addresses at all these coastal subdivisions that are second homes for them. You know the folks, the ones this state sold its soul to ! Some will agree, some will say I am nuts! Remember negative job growth since 1999!

What sounds good on paper really won't work in reality, because people will continue to smoke. They'll find a 'work around' for their habit. It will just cause new problems. Create areas for smokers and leave it at that. I quit over 10 yrs. ago (yay!) but I know this rule won't stop smokers.

I really wish people would stop giving tobacco such a bad rep. There are worse things they could worry about such as drugs, murders, rape etc. I just feel that there has been so much hype about tobacco since "cancer" was really introduce. Back many years ago people drank and used tobacco and they never died early. You it just makes you wonder what are they putting in it now that kills some many people. Is it that the tabocco causes cancer and other problems, or is it that the products that the goverment put in it, to try to make us quit. I feel that if you want o spend 5 dollars on tabocco and it is legal than so be it. The government makes money off of it so why are they trying to ban it so hard.

I have never smoked a cigarette in my life. But it is a legal product and people have every right to smoke em if they got em. Its bigger than smoking, its about choice and govt taking our ability to make choices away. Don't want to hear anything about second hand smoke..you have the choice to leave the area.
