Late-night Veto Override Maneuver Risky For NC GOP

Republicans in the North Carolina Legislature showed they're not afraid to play political hardball with Gov. Beverly Perdue and her fellow Democrats when they pushed through a late-night veto override of a bill affecting the state's leading teacher lobby.

Now, GOP leaders will learn whether the election-year move is worth the anger from the opposing party and laments from good-government advocates, with both groups accusing them of secret maneuvering.

The House voted after 1 a.m. Thursday to cancel Perdue's veto of a bill making it more difficult for the North Carolina Association of Educators to collect member dues by ending the practice of removing them from teacher paychecks. Perdue and the group are political allies.

The decision plays into the hands of Democrats who call the GOP extreme on education.
