Prosecutors say they will try a Raleigh man first for the murder of a Kinston mother whose body was found dismembered in a Texas creek.
Grant Hayes and his wife, Amanda, are charged with killing Laura Ackerson back in 2011 in Raleigh. Texas authorities believe Ackerson was killed in North Carolina, dismembered, and her body transported in coolers in a rented truck to Richmond, Texas.
Earlier this week a Wake County judge separated the trial for the couple because motions from the woman's attorney seemed to indicate she was planning to blame the murder on her husband.
Grant Hayes' trial is now set for August 26th, or sooner, while Amanda Hayes will face a jury afterward.
The couple's trial had originally been set for May 20th.
Hayes was the father of the victim's children and the two had been involved in a custody fight prior to the murder.
A Raleigh couple who are accused of killing a Kinston mother will now be tried separately.
Grant Hayes and his wife, Amanda, are charged with killing Laura Ackerson back in 2011 in Raleigh. The woman's dismembered body was found days later in a Richmond, Texas creek.
Texas authorities believe Ackerson was killed in North Carolina, dismembered, and her body transported in coolers in a rented truck to Richmond.
Originally, the couple were to be tried together, but in a pre-trial hearing this morning Judge Donald Stephens reversed his previous ruling.
The judge said because in motions filed there was an indication that the wife was going to blame her husband for Askerson's murder, the two should not be tried together.
Amanda Hayes' trial could begin May 20th in Wake County, while Grant Hayes' case could be in late August, or sooner if both sides are ready.
