Hit And Run Kills Two In Snow Storm, Driver Charged With Murder And DWI

Two people are dead after they were hit by a car on the side of I-40 in Wake County during a snow storm, and now troopers say the driver is charged with murder and DWI.

Marshall Doran, 21, of Kure Beach is scheduled to face the charges against him Friday afternoon in court.

Troopers say 39 year old Larry Kepley of Winston-Salem and 34-year-old Nathaniel Williams, a Missouri native living in Hope Mills, were killed Thursday night when they were hit by Doran's car.

The two had stopped to help out the driver of a truck whose cab had spun out of control and come to a stop perpendicular to the interstate near Garner. The bobtail tractor had no trailer on it, and the driver, Cardell Gayfield of Clayton, put reflectors on the road and then tried to move his truck out of the traffic lane.

Troopers say Kepley stopped his tractor trailer when he say Gayfield on the side of the road to help. Williams and another driver swerved to the right of Gayfield's truck to avoid hitting it; both of their cars went down an embankment. Williams walked back up to the road. As he and Kepley stood behind Gayfield's bobcat trailer, they were hit by Doran's Volvo.

Doran fled after hitting the two, troopers say. The Wake County Sheriff's Office and Raleigh Police Department set up a search perimeter, and the State Highway Patrol helicopter assisted in the search. After hiding in the woods, Doran gave himself up to a sheriff's deputy. He was then charged with two counts of second degree murder, two counts of driving while intoxicated, felony hit and run, careless and reckless driving and drug possession.
