Grand Jury Indicts Man For Perdue Flight Payment

A Wake County grand jury has indicted a western North Carolina man on a charge he caused Gov. Beverly Perdue's campaign to file false campaign reports by hiding he had given money to pay for a campaign flight.

Wake District Attorney Colon Willoughby said Tuesday that Robert Lee Caldwell had been indicted on one county of felony obstruction of justice. The indictment accuses Caldwell of engaging in a pattern to deceive The Bev Perdue Committee when she was running for governor in 2007 and 2008.

The indictment says Caldwell solicited a donation from another man and reimbursed him with cash. It says the other man's check was then given to pay an airplane company for a Perdue campaign flight.

A call to Caldwell's home wasn't immediately returned.
