GOP Legislators Want Budget Passed By June 1

North Carolina Republican budget leaders have given their underlings an aggressive schedule to get a budget to Gov. Beverly Perdue a month before the new fiscal year begins.

Budget subcommittee co-chairs received a draft calendar Wednesday laying out the process for approving a state spending plan by June 1. The proposal has the House approving its version by April 22, followed by the Senate doing the same three weeks later.

Passing a budget on time is rare. The budget was approved on schedule last year for the first time since 2003. Perdue signed that bill into law June 30.

A Senate committee was expected to meet later Wednesday to give Perdue more powers to find at least $400 million in budget savings this year.

So...the proposal is to heavily cut teachers and assistants, as well as 100 percent of technology spending, but only 5 percent of the top heavy admin staff? What's wrong with that picture? I guess the administrators knew who to pay off. In my opinion, direct class room spending should be the last thing to go. The specialty programs were barely touched (including a minimal 5 percent reduction for limited English) but the teachers and assistants take it on the chin again.

saywha? Stick to weather...just presenting the facts. My point, avoid cutting people in the teaching field, you know there are buddy reward programs when you read them. Don't shoot the messager...

I'm going to agree with snake oil for once, budget cutting has to be done. That said, I feel pretty sure that snake oil has no idea what most of the items on that document are and his idea of "I can see other places to cut" simply means "I don't understand it, so cut it."

Want to pass the budget by June 1? Round up all the illegal immigrants, including those protesting they get into community colleges, and send them out of the country. The parasitic drain on our economy (especially health care) would dry up very quickly.
