Former "Kinston Indians" Club Plays In New Park

ZEBULON, NC – The Carolina Mudcats dropped the exhibition game with their new parent club, the Cleveland Indians, 13-0 in front of 6,362 on Tuesday afternoon. The game celebrated a new player development agreement between the two as fans got a preview of this year’s team, and saw some jaw-dropping home runs from Indians’ hitters.

Derek Lowe looked in mid-season form while making the start for Cleveland. The veteran right-hander hurled three scoreless frames, allowing one hit. He struck out three.

Jason Donald paced the Indians’ offense with two hits, including a home run, and five RBI.

Mudcats’ starter Scott Barnes was hit for four runs on five hits in four innings of work. The left-hander walked three and struck out four.

With one out in the first, Asrubal Cabrera cranked the first of three homers on the day by the Indians. The shortstop turned on the first pitch offered by Barnes, and deposited it over the left field wall. The Indians added a run thanks to a double by Travis Hafner that was lost in the sun for a quick 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, Shelley Duncan blasted a towering shot over the left field wall. Jason Kipnis followed with a walk, and later, scored on a groundout by Michael Brantley.

Capitalizing on five walks, Cleveland put the game away in the seventh. After a sac-fly by Chad Huffman made it 5-0, Jason Donald stroked a two-run single to right. A base-loaded walk by Ryan Rohlinger gave the Indians a commanding 8-0 advantage.

In the eighth, Donald crushed a three-run dinger to left for the Indians’ third round-tripper. Gregorio Petit and Lou Marson drove in two runs in the ninth to round out the scoring.

The Mudcats will host the Winston-Salem Dash on Opening Night at Five County Stadium, April 6, at 7:15 p.m. Right-hander Clayton Cook (0-0, 0.00) will start against RH Jake Petricka (0-0, 0.00) for the Dash. Tickets are available through the box office by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting
