Another former U.S. Army general has joined the North Carolina Department of Transportation, this time as the next Division of Motor Vehicles commissioner.
Transportation Secretary Tony Tata announced Tuesday that Kelly Thomas of Fayetteville will become the new chief of the DMV starting next week.
Thomas was a brigadier general who most recently served as deputy chief of staff for personnel at Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg. Tata is also a former general and says Thomas' extensive experience in team building and his focus on customers make him a good choice for the job.
The division issues more than 2 million driver licenses annually and keeps registration records for nearly 9 million vehicles statewide.
Thomas will succeed James Forte, who moved to the state parole commission in June.
