Federal Judge Tells School To Take Pierced Girl

An attorney says a federal judge has ordered a North Carolina school to admit a 14-year-old student suspended for wearing a nose piercing she says is part of her religion.

Attorney Jon Sasser says U.S. District Judge Malcolm Howard announced the decision Friday.

Sasser and the American Civil Liberties Union sued Wednesday contending that Johnston County school officials violated the constitutional rights of Ariana Iacono. An attorney representing the school district would not comment Friday.

Ariana had been suspended from Clayton High School since classes started four weeks ago.

She and her mother say the nose piercing is part of their faith, not a fashion statement.

basically I am hearing a bunch of dumb rednecks complaining about nothing. Get the dip out of your mouths and get some lives or is that beneath you.

Despite all the condemnation about "nose rings," the only photographs shown of this poor girl show a very small jewel in the side of her nose, not a "nose ring." If that's all she wore, the school should be ashamed of itself, and the people that agree with it should be ashamed of themselves too. The press is falling down on this story by not making clear exactly what she was wearing in her nose. The court case should never have been brought. Her religion is no business of anybody's. It's no more ridiculous than the bible thumpers' beliefs in their imaginary friend in the sky, as George Carlin used to say. Amen!

I have gun pierced on my hand. Can I have it on at school? Tattoos and piercings are so low class...I never have understood the attraction....but I don't judge people solely on that. It does however give me a red flag warning.

Oh yes, dress codes work. They help keep things orderly and in control. LOL Not like anyone ever had a sexual fantasy about a Catholic schoolgirl's outfit. Nooooo... HAHAHA That works well. Not like any Catholic school kids have ever been elicit and out of control. No, of course not. Bahahaha! Oh Lord, I need to stop now, my ribs hurt.

When will our ADULTS grow up and realize that they should be the adult and young adults are ALWAYS testing them. To practice your type of religion is wonderful, but rules are to be followed that are set for ALL PEOPLE. Thanks

School dress codes work! Its not always about you! Religious what? Nobody wants to follow rules, get a life there are rules in society. Although the big problem in this country is education, the bigger problem we have is parenting! And some of the parents are complete idiots! As the mother and child already confirmed!

Let's see! What materialistic superficial thing do I want to wear on my person soooo bad that I am willing to call it a religion and get the ACLU involved and have them take it to court so I can wear it to school. HMmmmmmm! I don't know! There are so many more important things in this life that I can't waste time on something like that. I at that age had other things on my mind like what I was going to do with my life after high school....college, career. PALEEEEZZZZZ!

Momof14yrold, I totally agree with you 100%! My mother had me at almost 20, great mother! I have 10 piercings myself, 1 eyebrow, one lip, and 4 in each ear! Leave the girl alone, let her get an education she deserves!
