Duke Cancels Student Tailgating Activities

Duke has canceled student tailgating activities for the Boston College game after a teenager was found unconscious last weekend.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that the school's vice president for student affairs e-mailed students that the tailgate had lost its value as a spirit-building activity and was becoming dangerous.

The letter did not say whether tailgating would be canceled for the season-ending home game against rival North Carolina. The school says it plans to come up with a different game-day celebration for next season.

The Duke student newspaper, The Chronicle, reported that the teenager was OK, but had been taken to an emergency room after being found unconscious in a portable toilet.

Guess the portajohn wasn't lined in gold and didn't smell of lilac. It takes I big IQ to tailgate like the Pirates.

They definitely need to do this in Greenville because there are enough drunks around here as it is. Tailgating for some football game only promotes it more.

That's something the Great East Carolina University better never do. That would take away lots of money from the local businesses and it would be hard to forgive ECU for that.

you can't stop a tailgate..people are going to drink if they want to drink...not being in a designated area doesn't mean that no one else is going to pass out some other random place.. what are they going to do?? get rid of alcohol? haha yea right

This is ridiculous. Why punish everyone for one idiot’s actions. The "teenager" passed out. It's the body's natural reaction to shut down after excessive amounts of alcohol. If people paid for these tailgating spaces, and then were denied their privileges to tail gate then I would be making a huge complaint. I’d like to see how this will be enforced.

The story in WRAL has more information that I find very interesting. If driving or in a group, each person is allowed 24 beers. If walking into the tailgating area, you can only carry in one 6-pack. 24 beers in a 2 1/2 hr period???? And they are surprised someone passed out in a port-a-jon?? Come on! That's a challenge for most dookies. Read the WRAL report and get real information. And be sure to drive so you can get the entire case instead of just a 6 pack!!
