Atkinson Running Again For State School Chief

State schools Superintendent June Atkinson says she's running for another four years as chief administrator of North Carolina's public schools.

Atkinson announced Wednesday her decision to seek a third term as superintendent of public instruction. The decision comes as two fellow Democrats in the Legislature have talked about running. Atkinson said in an interview she doesn't know whether Reps. Tricia Cotham or Rick Glazier will run against her anyway in a primary.

Atkinson says the state's high school graduation rate has increased during her tenure. She says public schools are in a remodeling initiative of sorts and she doesn't want to leave in the middle.

Atkinson successfully sued in court in 2009 to prevent the State Board of Education from shifting her administrative powers to the board's chairman.
