Opening statements are scheduled in a Hillsborough courtroom for a Durham man accused of killing University of North Carolina student body president Eve Carson.
Laurence Alvin Lovette Jr. is charged with first-degree murder in the 2008 death of Carson, a native of Athens, Ga. Opening statements are expected to begin Tuesday.
The 20-year-old Lovette will not face the death penalty because he was a minor at the time of the shooting.
Authorities say Lovette and Demario Atwater kidnapped the 22-year-old student and took her to several ATMs, eventually withdrawing $1,400. Her body was found about a mile from the Chapel Hill campus. She was shot with a handgun and a 12-gauge shotgun.
Last year, Atwater pleaded guilty in the case and was sentenced to two life prison terms.
