Animal Rights Group Billboard In Wake County: "Spare A Turkey"

GARNER. N.C. (AP) -- An animal-rights group is campaigning to save some turkeys from the dinner table on Thanksgiving Day.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports Mercy for Animals is behind a billboard urging drivers to "spare a turkey" and "choose vegetarian." The billboard is in Garner, which is home to turkey giant Butterball.

Campaign coordinator Eddie Garza said the group put up the same sign in Chicago and Detroit last Thanksgiving season. He says it makes sense to come to North Carolina to urge residents to give turkeys something to be thankful for.

Mercy for Animals conducts undercover investigations of farms; including one that led McDonalds and Target to drop their ties with a major egg supplier after a video showed animal cruelty at facilities in Iowa, Minnesota and Colorado.

C-had: Forgive me if this should post twice, since my computer seems to be acting up...darn that Mayberry internet service! In truth, my comment at 3:44 PM on the 23rd was in jest. It was merely my way of poking some sarcastic fun at political correctness. By the way, according to my doctor, as of my most recent physical, I'm in excellent physical condition. I have never smoked, used illegal drugs, or even taken the first drink of alcohol. I run and lift weights on a regular basis. I'm 6'3, 220 lbs., with no pot belly to be seen, and am in better shape than a lot of guys half my age. I can also assure you that I talk nothing like Gomer Pyle. Despite being born and raised here in the South, most folks tell me that I have no detectable accent..nor am I given to exclaiming "Gaww-lee!" In any event, you can rest easy; the odds of you ever having to "endure" my presence are slim indeed. See, I don't associate with people who draw insulting conclusions about total strangers simply because they disagree with an anonymous internet posting. I am confident that YOU have neither manners nor class, and that just bothers me. Happy Thanksgiving.

Gotta love people that think animals are actually humans that grow fur / feathers and choose to live in the woods. Almost anything that ticks off people like this is fine and dandy with me. I'll make sure to eat an extra helping of turkey tomorrow. Then, to take my political incorrectness to the fullest extent, I'll go for a ride in my gas-guzzling SUV, while wearing a lawfully-concealed .45 on my hip. At the same time, I'll be listening to an encore edition of The Rush Limbaugh program. If I happen to enjoy a cold Mountain Dew while driving, I'll be sure to NOT recycle it. Ah, I LOVE the holidays!

I think it's a fantastic idea.. wasted tons of their operating funds and achieved absolutely NOTHING with it. Job well done! Please, Sir, may I have another!

PETA! People for eating tasty animals! Animal rights people really blow my mind, do they really have nothing else to do? Put your time and money into something that might help our economy, not ruin it like you have on the Outer Banks and other towns across this country and state. First you prevent me from driving on the beach, now you want me not to eat a turkey? really?

I'm all for treating animals humanely, but a turkey is for eating! It just wouldn't be Thanksgiving without it!

A bunch of puny little vegetarians worried a bird made for consumption....that's funny. Folks, it's a little too late to save the turkey I have....he's already plucked and in the brine. Can you say yum yum eat em up!

Hopefully they used pictures to get the message across to the "people" of Detroit - otherwise they wasted a lot of money with "words"....
