Trial Delayed For Former Aide To Ex-Governor Easley

The start of the federal trial for a former aide to ex-North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley on corruption-related charges has been delayed, but only by one week.

U.S. District Judge Terrence Boyle agreed on Tuesday to begin the trial of Ruffin Poole on May 3, instead of Boyle's earlier choice of April 26.

Poole's attorney asked for an August trial because he needed more time to review tens of thousands of pages of documents provided by U.S. attorneys prosecuting Poole on 57 counts. The prosecutors told Boyle last week they were ready to go on the April date.

Poole is accused of helping move along state permits for coastal housing projects while receiving gifts and making a sizable investment return on two of those subdivisions.
