Former Gov. Mike Easley will return to the spotlight this week as the State Board of Elections convenes to scrutinize his campaign's finances.
The five-member board is scheduled to begin Monday a weeklong examination of the Easley's campaign committee and the state Democratic Party.
The board initially examined unreported airplane flights and car expenses by The Mike Easley Committee while he was in office. The party was brought into the case as it forfeited more than $24,000 in non-cash contributions, many of them for air travel.
Easley left office in January after two terms as governor and hasn't commented on the board hearing.
The panel could issue fines or reprimands, refer the case to a district attorney for criminal charges, or exonerate the party and Easley's committee.
