Report: Mary Easley Rarely Spent Full Days At Work

A published report says logs of former first lady Mary Easley's everyday activities show she rarely spent a full day on the campus where she held a job she is now fighting to regain.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Sunday that newly discovered time-stamped records indicate Easley was on the North Carolina State University campus for an average of about three days a week during the months she was working full-time.

The records also show her doing other things during workdays, such as running errands.

The university's chancellor, provost and chairman of its board of trustees have stepped down. Easley was fired from her job after details became public about her hiring -- and an 80 percent salary increase. She has filed a grievance challenging her firing.

    I work with SALARIED employees and they still have to work their 40 hours a week.

    It looks like Mary owes the taxpayers a lot of back pay and an apology before she starts wearing stripes everyday.

    Mary Easley didn't do anything worse than what I have seen on the campus here in Greenville. There are lots of people who do not work 40 hour weeks, do not record time off, etc., but get paid for 40 hours of work. This includes hourly and salaried state employees. Mary didn't get away with it because of being in the political spotlight. Others get away with it every day, and its your money paying them.

    As bad as this is and sounds, this is not an uncommon practice for government employees especially in middle and upper management positions. I spent 35 in government and have seen first hand how people abuse the system. It does not matter if you are an hourly employee or salaried, a honest days work for a honest days pay is the golden rule.

    "Management", well stated and accurate. Only problem is, these people will still argue with you that everybody should put in their 40. They are jealous that some people can earn more money and not be a slave to a time clock.

    This is not a defense of Mary Easley, but one thing is evident in the below comments: Many of you obviously don't understand that a SALARIED position isn't necessarily an HOURLY position. In some jobs, you are hired to do a PARTICULAR TASK, or to fulfill a PARTICULAR RESPONSIBILITY, without regard to the amount of hours it takes to do it. That's why many salaries are PER YEAR, without hourly requirements. I have personally known many salaried employees who are able to attend to their required duties without spending 40 hours doing so ... just as I have known many salaried employees who put in far more than 40 hours doing their work. Often the criticism that salaried employees do not "stay long enough" or "put in their time" comes from unskilled hourly production laborers or other workers whose pay is calculated upon the time they spend at the work. Many such employees seem unable to understand that THIS RULE DOES NOT APPLY TO ALL JOBS.

    We voters are such fools. We believe whatever we are told. Example of our voting, I have called my congresswomen three times since January, her agent told me all three times, in different months she was out of the country (at our expense). I cannot believe in three months she had to be overseas for three different trips. What am I missing. I truely believe their is enough money in Raleigh to run the state, but not the expense accounts of our politicians. Someone please help me understand.

    Both Easleys are some of the worst crooks we have ever had in this state...thank goodness they are out & I'm sure history will not be very good to them.....I thought Beverly would be better but now I'm beginning to second guess myself about her also....If only good honest citizens would run for Governor!!

    I like how her lawyers always bring up the fact that she got good evaluations on her performance reviews. First, the State of North Carolina performance reviews are a joke. I know plenty of people who get good reviews but are horible employees. I know of some that had bad reviews that were then changed to good ones because the person complained. Second, who is going to give the Governer's wife a bad review? Certainly nobody who likes their job. Easly, give it up. You both were cheats and it is catching up with you. Wonder if the missing year from the Highway Patrol's logs will ever show up?
