There's a growing beer culture in North Carolina, some area breweries tell WITN, residents are getting more interested in trying their products but trying is different than buying. That's why one brewer in Kinston says he's thrilled state lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow shoppers to sample his beer in store aisles.

Trent Mooring is taking his passion for beer and turning it into a business.

"It’s actually made with 100% barley, more like drinking a fine wine."

Mother Earth Brewing is set to open in Kinston in about a month. Once open, Mooring's next goal will be selling it. That's why he hopes state lawmakers approve new legislation that would allow grocery stores to sample beer.

Mooring says "It puts a big personal touch on the craft beer scene, we can actually go to retail outlets, customers can put a face to the people who make it, let's them know we care."

Wine sampling has been allowed since 2001, at Fresh Market in Greenville, store managers say it's been a great way for local companies to get the word out about their products.

"You've got customers coming in, sampling wines, buying wines that they typically would not commit to buy, unless they had a chance to try that wine first."

If the measure is approved, Fresh Market District Manager Todd Crouch says, Fresh Market stores would probably hold beer tastings as well.

So, it seems local breweries and local supermarkets want it but will North Carolina lawmakers approve the measure? It could be voted on later this week.

The senate has already poured out a yes vote, now it's up to the house to either cheers the measure or dry it out.
