Durham County Man Charged In 4-Year-Old's Death

A Durham County man faces charges of smothering his 4-year-old son to death and trying to kill his two other children.

Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that Joseph Mitchell is in Duke Hospital, recovering from self-inflicted stab wounds.

The Durham County Sheriff's Office says the 46-year-old Mitchell will face charges of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Mitchell and his family lived in a community near the Durham and Orange county line.

A sheriff's lieutenant says the motive is not yet clear.

yeah, things are tight for us financially (if that is what's making people so crazy) but a hug from my great kids when I get home from work makes it all seem so unimportant!

We really don't have room for these people, this will continue innocent, lives will be lost over and over children, women , elderly. It's time for ordinary citizens to make a change cause it ain't happening elsewhere. This will soon hit home if not already. People, we have thousands of young soldiers losing thier lives in the name of freedom and our safety. Look around we live in a very unsafe and dangerous place. Locally we can't even take our trash out and be safe. Please pay attention to your sourroundings and be prepared, in the next minute you or a loved ones life may depend on it. Please, we can turn the table and take our country back, don't be a victim on the news tomorrow.

This is a terrible situation. I know this family and could never have seen this coming. I imagine the mind does strange things to people when they feel they are in a hopeless situation. No excuse for what he did but I can't imagine what the world must feel like to someone when that seems like the best option. Unreal.

I was reading the story on WRAL. Financial problems? Who doesn't these days. Do you have to kill your own innocent child? To bad he didn't succeed in his attempt to get out the easy way. All these twisted folks all over the country killing their families because they can't hack it is tragic. There are way too many other solutions to todays financial woes. This is NOT the answer.
