After local strawberry farmers struggled with late and damaged crops due to cold weather and a virus from Canada, finally some farmers say their fields are almost ready for picking.
Farmers at Strawberries on 903 in Winterville say their fields will be in full bloom next week. This winter they had to protect their crops from 18 frosts compared to the usual 3-4.
"We've had some really nice weather the last 10 days and we've had a crop that's just exploded on us. There is a lot of potential out there. When people see the blooms and the ripe berries we're having, next week we should really be getting into it," said farmer Mike Skinner
Strawberry season typically lasts 6 weeks, but can last longer if temperatures stay below 90 degrees.
