The Highway Patrol says teen driver caused a three car collision involving a Winterville police officer Monday afternoon about 3:00 p.m..
Troopers say 17-year-old Caroline Barrett troopers was driving south on Highway 11in Winterville, wasn't paying attention, and ran a red light. Troopers say she hit the passenger side of 50-year-old Sgt. Juan Mercado's patrol car on Davenport Farm Road. Toopers say the police car collided with Dodge Charger stopped waiting to make left turn onto Memorial Drive from Davenport Farm Road. The driver of the Charger was not hurt. Sgt. Mercado was taken to the hospital and quickly released. Barrett had minor injuries and was sent to Vidant Children's Hospital.
The Highway Patrol says rain was not a factor.

It appears one vehicle may have been making a left turn onto Davenport Farm Road, while the patrol car was southbound on Highway 11.
