Want To See Richard Petty's 1988 Grand Prix For Yourself? PCC Is Making It Happen

You can get a first-hand look at Pitt Community College's Construction and Industrial Technology Division this weekend, along with some special displays.

The public can also see the Petty's Garage tour rig and Snap-on Tools displays and demonstrations.

PCC is an education affiliate of Petty's Garage, which a news release reports is a "high-performance race shop owned by NASCAR Hall-of-Famer Richard Petty."

The shop brings several cars and Petty employees to the school to help the college recruit new CIT students, and the public is welcome to head to campus and check it out from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Friday.

High school automotive students and technicians from local car dealerships have been invited to the event.

“Mechanics aren’t working under shade trees any longer,” said Norman Lilley, department chair of PCC’s Automotive Systems Technology program. “And as the automotive service industry has become more and more sophisticated, PCC has kept pace with the field’s educational demands. We have a great new teaching facility on campus and the latest equipment from Snap-on Tools to produce graduates prepared for the workplace once they arrive.”

Snap-on Tools demonstrations as well as a car cruise are planned for Saturday.

WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College’s Construction and Industrial Technology (CIT) Division will be on display for the public this weekend, starting Friday with a visit from the Petty’s Garage tour rig and Snap-on Tools displays and demonstrations.

Earlier this year, PCC signed a two-year agreement to become an “education affiliate” of Petty’s Garage, LLC, which is a high-performance race shop owned by NASCAR Hall-of-Famer Richard Petty. Through the partnership, Petty’s Garage agreed to bring its travelling display to PCC once a year to help the college recruit new CIT students.

The display, which will feature several cars and Petty employees on hand to speak with visitors, is open to the public and will be set up in front of PCC’s new state-of-the-art CIT Building on Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Norman Lilley, department chair of PCC’s Automotive Systems Technology program, says area high school automotive students have been invited to check out the Petty display and tour the new CIT Building as have technicians from local car dealerships.

“Mechanics aren’t working under shade trees any longer,” Lilley said. “And as the automotive service industry has become more and more sophisticated, PCC has kept pace with the field’s educational demands. We have a great new teaching facility on campus and the latest equipment from Snap-on Tools to produce graduates prepared for the workplace once they arrive.”

Saturday’s schedule of events includes Snap-on Tools diagnostic and wheel service equipment demonstrations inside the CIT Building’s three automotive shops and the Building Construction program’s annual house auction. Students from several CIT programs have combined efforts to produce the 1,568-square-foot home, which features three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The auction will take place at the corner of Reedy Branch Road and Warren Drive on the PCC campus at 10 a.m. Proceeds from the sale will fund future home-building projects at the college.

A car cruise-in is also slated for Saturday. Lilley says the event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is likely to draw a wide variety of cars for display inside and outside of the CIT Building. There is no charge to attend or participate in the cruise-in, he said.
