After 41 years, Charles Coburn is retiring his umpire number in Pitt County.
In his 65 years, Coburn has made a name for himself in Pitt County. A graduate from Pitt Community College, Coburn was honored by the college in 2000 for his years of dedication to the school by having the gymnasium named after him, but Coburn says even though he is retiring he will still be an active volunteer in the community.
"It's been a great 41 years. You run into coaches you don't get along with and you run into coaches that you do get along with, but overall they are trying to do their job and you as an umpire want to do the best job you can do," said Coburn.
A ceremony to honor Coburn will be held Saturday at 3pm at the Charles Coburn Center. The event is open to the community and several keynote speakers will also be in attendance.
