TEACHER OF THE WEEK: Debby Avery

Debby Avery is retiring at the end of this year after 38 years of teaching. Thirty-four of those years have been with Pitt County Schools. She graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill and completed her Master's degree with ECU. This is her 7th year as a hospital school teacher at Vidant Children's Hospital. She has also taught Exceptional Children's classes at WH Robinson and Wintergreen and served as a PCS Exceptional Children's Program Specialist. Debby says she has truly loved all her teaching years.

“Teaching at the hospital has given me the opportunity to get to know some remarkable young people on an individual basis. Working at the hospital helps me remember to "count my blessings" and be thankful every day,” Avery said.

The person who nominated her wrote: “Ms. Debby is a special person who has the ability to relate to any age child and background. Many times, these children are facing particular challenges…battling cancer, kidney disease, recovering from heart surgery or a car accident, or managing chronic conditions like sickle cell disease or diabetes. The list goes on and on. She provides school services either in the classroom or at the bedside in the intensive care unit or general medical unit. She has a gift of connecting with these children and families at some of the highest stress points in their lives.”
