Three men suspected in a robbery and shootout in Pitt County made their first appearances in court this morning at the Pitt County Detention Center.

WITN's Hilary Magacs was there and says 23-year-old Demetrius Hines, 27-year-old Travis Pittman and 23-year-old O'Joshua Roberts each had a bond set of $2 million. The three men from Greenville are each charged with attempted first degree murder and armed robbery.

Hines was in a wheelchair at his first appearance. It's not clear if he was shot during the incident Tuesday.

All three suspects were assigned a public defender for their cases. Their next appearance in court is scheduled for April 26.

A conviction of attempted first degree murder comes with a maximum sentence of 40 years and four months; a conviction for armed robbery comes with a maximum of 17 years.

Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks says three men were arrested shortly after the shootout on Manning Road, which was reported around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Captain Paula Dance expects more charges to be filed against the trio. She says one of the shots hit a passing car with three children inside, ages 10, 7, and 2.

Three men are in custody after the Pitt County Sheriff's Department says one person was shot in the leg after an apparent altercation and robbery in Greenville.

Pitt County deputies say they responded to a call of shots fired around 5:30 Tuesday night at 1797 Manning Road. When they arrived they discovered one person had been shot in the leg, and while deputies are still trying to piece together what actually happened at the scene they say they are surprised that only one person was injured.

According to deputies, a couple and three young children were moving into a home when an altercation started between the family and three men. Deputies say it's unclear how well the three suspects knew the family, but at one point everyone was inside the house. That's when deputies suspect an altercation and robbery occurred. The three suspects that are now in custody reportedly ran to their car with the stolen possessions, but they didn't get very far. Deputies say multiple shots were fired between both the victims and the three men inside the vehicle.

"I think once they started exchanging fire, they tried to flee the scene real quickly and when they did that's when they wrecked the vehicle and they continued to exchange gunfire. Now, how many rounds have been fired? We don't know yet. We're in the process of gathering more information," said Sheriff Neil Elks.

Deputies spoke with several neighbors and witnesses this evening, but say the case is still under investigation.

No names are being released at this time.

A section of Manning Road is closed near McCoy road in Greenville as law enforcement investigates the report of a man shot there.

There are 2 Pitt County crime scene units on scene and crime scene tape surrounds a home at 1797 Manning Road. A description of the victim nor details about his injuries have not been released.
