Sheriff Suspends Two Deputies After Fight With Former Trooper

Two deputy sheriffs have been suspended after a fight between them and a former Highway Patrol trooper.

Pitt County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Christy Wallace says Deputy Robert Brooks and Deputy Joe Reason have been suspended without pay until their internal investigation is complete.

The alleged fight took place at A.J. McMurphy's Irish Pub on Turnbury Drive in Greenville around 1:00 a.m Friday.

A Greenville police case report lists the victim as Daniel Vaughan of Winterville, who is a former state trooper. The report says a Pitt County deputy sheriff badge and identification, along with a 9mm Glock handgun were seized by police as part of the investigation. It also says offenses included simple assault and communicating threats. No arrests were made and the report says the case was closed.

The owner of A.J. McMurphy's says it started inside, and those involved were quickly taken out by pub employees and police were called.

Greenville police said they investigated the assault and told Vaughan he could pursue charges if he wanted to. A spokesman says this case was handled like any other misdemeanor assault case.

Sgt. Joe Friday says no firearm was used in the commission of any crime and that the gun and badge were seized by officers for apparent safe keeping.

Wallace says Reason has been with the Sheriff's Office for 14 years, while Brooks has been a deputy since December 2011.
