UPDATE: High School Nude Photo Investigation Now In Four ENC Counties

More Video...

Another county in the east has been added to the list of places reporting nude photos of teens posted and shared with a cell phone app.

The Onslow County Sheriff's Office says it's working with Pitt, Craven and Edgecombe counties to track down who is responsible for sharing nude photos on Instagram.

The sheriff is not releasing any more details on the Onslow County connection, but the school district says a concerned parent made a report to a board member.

Suzie Ulbrich with Onslow County Schools says, "These things change on a daily basis. There are posting sites that we have a tough time keeping up with. We have to continually encourage them to try to stay up to date. Also, have access to their children's devices and see what's on there and see what their children are doing on a regular basis."

The Onslow County School District has a Director of Safe, Civil and Caring Schools. Their role is to remind parents and students of dangers online, and on their cell phones.

Kristie Kaine has a 14-year-old son. Kaine says she uses an app to track her son's activities on his cell phone. She encourages other parents to do the same.

Kaine says, "It's hard with kids today. It's just a hard world we live in. Things have developed to the point we need to try every way we can to keep our kids safe."

That app will run you about $25 to $35 a year.

Previous story:

The North Carolina Department of Justice confirms that an SBI probe of nude photo sharing between high school students has moved into Eastern Carolina.

The probe originally centered in Wake County, but now the SBI confirms nine counties are involved. Those include Pitt, Craven and Edgecombe counties.

A spokesman for Pitt County Schools says he has heard some of their students were involved.

The school system release a statement Wednesday afternoon:

"Pitt County Schools was recently notified about the criminal investigation into the posting of illicit and illegal photos of some students on social media. However, district officials are not aware of any photos that have been taken on school property or with school devices. The school system will continue to work with investigators any way possible as they search for the source of these postings. Additionally, Pitt County Schools is collaborating with school resource officers to rehash the costly consequences of unsafe behavior online. Parents are also encouraged to continue monitoring their kids and how they utilize technology and social media."

The investigation began when a Wake County mother found a nude photo of her daughter posted on Instagram when she was 14 or 15 years old. That girl is now 18.

The list of counties involved now includes: Wake, Durham, Pitt, Craven, Johnston, Chatham, Randolph, Surry and Edgecombe.

Distributing nude photos of minors is a felony in North Carolina, but so far no arrests have been made.
