River Park North Makeover Causes Temporary Mess

A Pitt County park is receiving a bit of a make over, but some residents say, so far, they don't like what they see.

The piles of tree branches surrounded by orange cones at River Park North in Greenville have some residents asking questions. Parks coordinator Christopher Horrigan says last month they decided to clear out the non-native invasive plants that had overgrown to allow them to plant 40 new plants and 25 new species. Horrigan says, they were fortunate to have boy scout volunteers do the entire project leaving the city with a remaining $200 tab.

"We're trying to improve the quality of the habitat out here, increase opportunities for users to enjoy the park, and address some safety concerns from the staffing standpoint," said Horrigan.

Horrigan says, all of the tree limbs will be cleaned up by February 25th. After that he says they will then start to plant the new plants, which he hopes to have done by the end of spring.
