Republican Congressman Jones Beats Back Primary Challenge

Some viewed it as the strongest effort to date from his own party members to unseat him, but 3rd District Republican Congressman Walter Jones successfully beat back the challenge.

The 10-term Republican faced North Carolina native Taylor Griffin, who worked for years in Washington for the government and consulting firms before returning to the state to run. Griffin said Jones' voting record is out of step with conservative values of the region.

Two groups alone spent more than $1 million combined with television and online ads and voter contact efforts to oppose Jones and support Griffin.

Jones says he's voted his conscience first and continued to promote his conservative views on abortion and gun rights.

Al Novinec of Jacksonville was the third candidate in the GOP primary.

There are no Democrats running against Jones in the fall election.
