NEW INFO: ECU Chancellor Withdraws From New York Job

East Carolina University's chancellor says he is no longer interested in the job at the University at Albany.

ECU says Steve Ballard withdrew his name from consideration this morning.

"I appreciate the interest from Albany, an excellent university. However, my heart stays with ECU," Ballard said in a statement.

Earlier this week the chancellor confirmed that he had been contacted by the Albany university about their president's job.

Ballard has been at ECU since August 2004.

East Carolina University's chancellor is a finalist for the head of the University at Albany.

ECU says Steve Ballard was contacted by the University at Albany for its president's job. “It is a very early stage of the search process,” Ballard said. “I am honored to be considered but remain focused on my important work as chancellor of East Carolina University.”

In a news release, Ballard says he is a "candidate of interest" for the New York job. The Albany Times-Union says he is one of nine finalists for the president's position. The paper says since it published the list, four candidates have dropped out.

Ballard has been chancellor at ECU since May 2004, the university's tenth chief executive. Prior to ECU, Ballard was provost at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.

An ECU spokesman tells us Ballard is out of town and unavailable for comment, while the University at Albany would neither confirm nor deny whether Ballard was a finalist.

The University at Albany was founded in 1844 and has more than 17,000 students, while ECU has over 27,000 students enrolled.
