Proposed Pay Increase For City Of Greenville Workers

Some city workers in the east might get a little extra money this year.

The Greenville City Council approved a recommendation to provide a 2.5 percent pay increase for utility and city workers.

Even with a budget deficit expected to be more than two million dollars, Mayor Allen Thomas says they have a plan as to how they'll fund this pay increase. "There's built in staff components built in to our budget, there's a vehicle replacement fund or within the budget of the number of trips they take or they may do and we've also asked them to go back and what else we're going to do is ask for a freeze of non-essential hires for the next number of years, which will help us in a significant amount, that will help us as well. "

Greenville workers have not had a merit or cost of living increase for several years, except for in 2011 which was just 1.5 percent.
