Pitt County Commissioners Approve Smoking Ban For Its Offices, Vehicles

Pitt County commissioners voted Monday morning to ban smoking in all county owned buildings and vehicles.

County manager Scott Elliot says the smoking ban will take effect July 1st. Prior policy allowed for department heads to set smoking policies within each department allowing for smoking rooms. Elliot says the commissioners decided on the ban after concerns from employees.

"We've had departments where the employees have complained about second hand cigarette smoke both for their physical health as well as the effects of smoke in their clothing." said Elliott.

There will be outdoor smoking areas at all county facilities.
