Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks has some words of advice for parents as their kids are getting set for summer vacation. Keep tabs on them to keep them from getting into trouble.

Sheriff Elks' comments came after several car break-ins recently- the latest Wednesday night just off of Highway 43 near Manning Road and Ivy Road. He says the previous break-ins were mostly done by teenagers. Elks says the rate of these crimes could go up once school lets out in a few weeks, and he blames their parents.

"Responsibility of knowing where your kids are, being responsible, setting curfews, knowing where your children are. Do them a favor. Make them come home instead of letting them be out in the streets committing crimes," said Elks.

Sheriff Elks says the easiest way to prevent your car from being broken into, is to simply lock your door.
