Police tracked down a shooting suspect in a corn field Friday night after they say he shot his girlfriend in a Pitt County apartment and took off.

Fountain Police Chief Bobby Dildy says 40-year-old Malcolm King shot 38-year-old Tasha Battle in their apartment at Deerfiled II Apartments during a domestic dispute that escalated about 5:40 pm Friday.

King is charged with attempted murder and is being held in the Pitt County Detention Center under no bond.

Police found Battle with a gunshot wound to her leg and she was taken to the hospital. Chief Dildy says she was shot at six times, but he could only confirm the leg wound. A K-9 team searched for King and found him about a hour later in a corn field off highway 258 and took him into custody.
