Bridge construction will be underway starting on Monday for one road in Pitt County, with the goal of making it safer.
The Department of Transportation said the small bridge over Chicod Creek on Grimesland Bridge Road will begin to be replaced on Monday.
A section of the road will close as a result.
The bridge was built almost 40 years ago, in 1975, and is classified as functionally obsolete. That means the bridge is safe, but needs replacement to meet current and future traffic demands.
Officials said a posted detour will be up starting Monday.
Construction is expected to be finished by April 3rd of 2014.
