Pitt Co. Elementary Students Help The Homeless

Sixth graders at A.G. Cox school in Pitt County are celebrating the Christmas holiday by collecting items for those in need.

The kids started working on a project a few weeks ago called "Homelessness in America."

The project taught students how many Americans are homeless and how those numbers have changed in the last decade, and why.

The students then decided to start collecting things for those in need in their own community and checked with the Greenville Community Shelter to find out what items they needed most.

Teachers say the students have brought in supplies and filled 200 bags with toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotion and deodorant.

Teacher Angela Chandler says she never expected so many donations. She says, "It's helped me to just remember, especially this time of year, that it's about helping other people and it's not all about what we can get for ourselves, and our kids have really shown us that over the last couple of weeks. They've been so willing to give to someone else, than to get something for themselves and it really helps to put this time of the year in perspective for us."

Chandler says this is the first year they've done the project but it won't be the last. she says the shelter will be picking up the donations and distributing them to those in need over the Christmas holiday.
